Heinz Spoerli ranks among the leading choreographers of Europe. He internalizes the art of sound in order to express it in the language of dance. Music releases visions in him, which reach us as a perfect ballet.Spoerli constantly challenges the 50 dancers of the Zurich Ballet to new leaps of achievement and does everything to extract the best from himself and his dancers. Born in 1940, Spoerli was drawn to theatre from an early age and at 14, worked as an extra at the Basel Opera. Later he trained as a dancer with Walter Kleiber. he was as a soloist with Todd Bolender in Cologne, with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Grand Canadian Company in Montreal, at the Basel Theatre and the Grand Theatre de Genève as dancer and choreographer.
Spoerli’s debut as a choreographer was with Le Chemin in 1973, which premièred at the Grand Theatre de Genve. This lead to a new position as ballet director of Basel Theatre. During his 17 years with the company he developed an extensive repertoire reflecting classical and contemporary works and choreographed over 70 ballets which include neo-classical and contemporary short pieces as also new renditions of classics such as Giselle, The Nutcracker, etc.Spoerli’s choreographic engagements on the inter-national stage include the Stuttgart Ballet Company, The Vienna Opera Paris Opera, National Ballet Company of Helsinki, The Royal Swedish Company, Chinese and Company of La Scala.
In the early nineties, Spoerli moved to Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and in 1996 took over the helm at Zurich Ballet. Ever since he has spearheaded the company back into the international arena and created several new works for the company. In 2002 Heinz Spoerli was appointed ‘Officier De L’ordre Des Arts Et Lettres’ by the French Minister of Culture. Prior to that he was awarded the Swiss National Arts Award ‘Hans Reinhart Ring’, the Jacob Burckhardt-(1991) and the Euopean Art (2000) / EU2002. He has also served as a jury member at many international ballet competitions and was a member of the executive board of the Nureyev Foundation.
